Welcome to the Department of Zoology

 

The Department was established during the year 1951 with zoology at Intermediate level. Later it grew up to the undergraduate level by offering a course in zoology.

 

Courses and Specialization:

 

The Department offers B. Sc. course in Zoology with a combination of Botany and Chemistry. Another course was started in 2002-2003 in zoology with the combination of Biotechnology and Chemistry. The department also offers Ph.D. Programmes.

 

The intake of B.Sc. (BZC) students are 40, and B.Sc. (BTBC,BTZC) is also 40.

 

Infrastructure:

 

The Department is spacious and has a beautiful museum with a rare collection of different animal specimens, slides and biovisual charts. The Department possesses latest infrastructural facilities such as slide projector, overhead projectors, spectrophotometers, calorimeters, centrifuges, balances including electric balances, microscopes, pH meters, conductivity meter, incubators, electrophoretic unit, computer.etc,. The Department has two UG labs and a Research lab.

 

Faculty Profile:

 

The Department has dedicated teaching staff specialized in various fields of Zoology, including Animal Physiology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Environmental Biology.

 

Research Activities:

 

The Department is equipped with enough infrastructures to carry out research and is a recognised research centre of Osmania University. So far 28 students have received Ph.D degrees from this Department. Several major and minor research projects were also completed and a minor research project is under progress.

 

Conferences:

 

The Department organized a two-day National Workshop on “Integrated Mosquito Management and Future Directives” during 8th-9th January, 2007. Under the U.G.C. Research Award Scheme, a Documentary on Chikungunya was produced in collaboration with CIEFL-EMMRC.

 

Publications:

 

The Department has so far published 150 research papers in reputed and refereed National and International journals, 49 general articles and 12 books.
